Where I have been... A short essay by Norm.Around this time of year, every year, my life gets incredibly hectic. I work in sports publishing, and as any sports fan will admit, everything starts rolling in the fall. Football starts, baseball playoffs start, hockey usually starts and all of the prep for basketball begins. Normally, in an average August, I get 4 to 4.5 hours sleep a night. I then work from around 9:00 am until around 11:30 pm. Then I relax, eat and then try to go to sleep. Every day. Including Saturday and Sunday. Well, this year is a bit different. Being a father has made sleep even more of premium, as Calvin must eat EVERY THREE HOURS. His stomach is more accurate than an atomic clock. So regardless of whether it is actullay my turn to feed him, his cry is enough to wake the dead. So now I get, on average, 2 hours of uninterrupted lseep a night. I am physically exhausted, mentally drained, and now, as of last night, even more at a loss. Lisa had an ear infectioon since around the 8th month of pregnancy. Since she was pregnant, she just had to suck it up. Well, after she had to stop breast feeding she took some antibiotics and thought everything was going fine. Nope. In fact her infection just lessened. So yesterday morning, Lisa awoke with severe pain in her ear. This was followed by her ear drum rupturing. So, she is in a ton of pain, and groggy from pain meds. With that inmind, I have now taken an additonal feeding shift in the night. Needless to say I never sleep anymore. But I am not really complaining, just explaining. I am not complaining, because I wouldn't trade any of it. Not a bit. FIrst of all, nothing is as amazing as being a dad. Nothing. Calvin smiles at me now, and he tries to crawl around which is hilarious because he cannot control his arms and legs at the same time so he just pushes his head with his feet, then moves his arms forward and then repeats. It is so great to watch. Plus he mumbles baby talk and looks like he is trying to have a conversation. It is really adorable. And on the Lisa end of things, she is the one that takes care of him the most. She is the one who changes more diapers, washes and sterilizes the bottles, feeds him 5 of his 8 feedings etc. So I really just have to suck it up if she isn't feeling well, and that is what I am doing. Overall, Calvin is great. He weighs somewhere around 12-14 pounds, he smiles and pulls hair, he doesn't like to burp, and thinks his farts are funny. So all in all, that's where I have been. Being uber busy with work and doting over the cutest baby in the whole world (NO ARGUMENTS, HE IS!) and loving every minute of it.

I am blown away by the fact that Calvin is 12-14 pounds. Olivia is only that big, of course she was a preemie and we've had so many food issues since her birth...she stopped nursing a few months ago, possibly due to the dairy allergy we figure out she has, then we had to try out different formulas until we found one that worked (it is the one that cost $23 for a small can, of course). I can't remember if I mentioned that she has acid reflux due to a premature stomach, which has also hampered her eating efforts, so we still also feed her every 3 hours because she does better with smaller amounts. Although, she sleeps through one feeding at night so I get about 6 hours of sleep uninterrupted (my hubby doesn't do any of the feedings, hmmm...) Anyway, as you said Norm, it is all worth it.
